Serving up injustice to poor people, people of color, and women, since 1776 … She has served more years in jail than the number of years she had been on this Earth at the time of her supposed “crime.”

Meanwhile, actual murderers and rapists walk around freely if they wear a police badge or serve in the U.S. military.

Today in labor history, May 12, 1902: Nearly 150,000 anthracite coal miners go on strike in Eastern Pennsylvania for higher wages, better working conditions, and recognition of their union: the United Mine Workers of America. After months of an extreme coal shortage, President Teddy Roosevelt intervened, a commission was set up, and the strike was called off after 163 days.

“When I consider the lack of cooperation in human society, I can only conclude that it stems from ignorance of our interdependent nature. I am often moved by the example of small insects, such as bees. The laws of nature dictate that bees work together in order to survive. As a result, they possess an instinctive sense of social responsibility. They have no constitution, laws, police, religion or moral training, but because of their nature they labour faithfully together. Occasionally they may fight, but in general the whole colony survives on the basis of cooperation. Human beings, on the other hand, have constitutions, vast legal systems and police forces; we have religion, remarkable intelligence and a heart with great capacity to love. But despite our many extraordinary qualities, in actual practice we lag behind those small insects; in some ways, I feel we are poorer than the bees.”

A. Given enough time, the chemicals would disappear, but of course there’s not a total ban, and it’s only set to last two years. Farmers are banned from using neonicotinoids on crops bees feed upon after December 2013, but they’ll sow treated crops in October 2013, which means the chemicals will persist in growing plants until the summer of 2014, and then the ban will expire in 2015. It will hardly have been in place in real terms. People will surely campaign for an extension, but they won’t have any more evidence than we do now, since it’s unlikely there will be a dramatic change in bee population when the chemicals remain in the soil. They’re still being used quite extensively on winter wheat [not pollinated by bees], which is the most common agricultural crop in the U.K. and perhaps Europe. So in two years, we might be exactly where we are now.
”

- Hive mind: Talking with the man who may save Europe’s bees | Grist (via bonnyglen)
